Longtime Coin Collector Looks to the Internet to Start a New Resource for Hobbyists
Daytona Beach, FL (PRWEB) November 1, 2008 -- For 30 years, Joe Dunn has had a passion that started when his grandfather introduced him to the joy of collecting coins. Interested in turning his hobby into his job, Dunn and his wife, Alicia, started www.StarRarities.com, a coin collecting resource that is not only for longtime collectors, but also for others who are discovering the hobby for the first time.
"We started the website in April 2008 and we've steadily been getting exposure," said Alicia Dunn.
With little more than a glimmer from the coins, the Dunns go to several coin shows, promoting their site and business the old-fashioned way: word-of-mouth and hard work.
"Sometimes we'll walk around and just try to find coins and sometimes we'll have a table," said Dunn. "We try to have a wide variety of coins. You have collectors who like to collect coins in a 'good' state and others who collect coins in a 'mint' state. We also like to give as much advice and help as we can to beginners."
While the Dunns go out to coin shows, they are simultaneously working on their site, which not only has a wide selection of coins, but it will soon feature a host of other products.
"We're planning on adding our currency and some statehood quarters," said Dunn.
StarRarities.com also has another unique feature that makes it user-friendly for all collectors. "Joe added a forum to our site," explained Dunn. "It's for educational purposes. It's a place for our customers and fellow collectors to ask questions and get responses from other collectors, as well as us."
In keeping with the theme of coin collecting camaraderie, the Dunns have also launched www.USCurrencyBlog.com, a blog that will have tips for new and collectors alike. "We'll have some tips for kids, as well as some tips for people who want to learn how to grade and validate their pieces," Dunn said.
Dunn maintains that through StarRarities.com, they will be able to unite coin collectors by providing a user-friendly resource for everyone. "We're going to be posting coin shows on the site and on the blog and we really want people to get involved with us," she said. "This is a really exciting time to be part of a large community that used to be marginalized by region."
